Happy Ever After

The air rippled in a tiny square and the most unlikely people walked forward into the space, both dressed out of context with their surroundings. Yolanda was adorned in a beautiful orange organza dress that reached down to her ankles, her feet in leather sandals, and her flaming red hair was loose in the fashion of an unmarried maiden.

Jacob on the other hand had a tweed jacket with matching pants to the knee, purple stockings, and buckled shoes, a large satin top hat, and pince-nez, although, he didn’t need glasses.

They both looked around, Jacob smiling foolishly, at the solitude of the place, as Yolanda exclaimed how everything was a verdant green.

“I’ve spread the blanket over here, Yolanda, come and join me. I want to see what you’ve brought for our picnic.”

Jacob looked up and noticed that Yolanda had not moved.

“Yolanda, you know you can change the décor to whatever you wish.”

Jacob opened the hamper, and engrossed himself in laying out the large chocolate cake, fresh pastries, bottled wine, glasses and plates, murmuring to himself as he worked.

Yolanda giggled with a wink of her eye, a yellow carpet of daisies spread out all round them and down the adjoining hillside. She then pointed at the yellow sun and turned up the colour and heat, until it was a dazzling orange, that matched her dress.

She turned back to the blanket to see Jacob had removed his jacket and shoes, sitting in his stocked feet upon the purple blanket.

“Oh Jacob, for a time traveller you are a cheeky fellow indeed."

Jacob passed Yolanda a plate with a piece of chocolate cake and a large glass of wine. “Let’s enjoy ourselves while the sun is shining, shall we.”

‘I am an unmarried woman.” she said, although, her saucy smile belied the chastity, she spoke of.

“Yes, yes, you've told me that before, and I’ll keep it in mind of course, yet I did first meet you in a tavern of the 16th Century, and we had a wonderful romp in the hay, your squeals were not of chastity that night."

They both laid on the blanket, Yolanda’s head in Jacob’s lap, and listened to the buzz of bees, and bird song, that Yolanda had added to set the scene.

"My dear Jacob, that was another life entirely.”

“Yolanda, I’m ready to start a new life, entirely with you, for as long as it lasts.”

Yolanda picked one of the yellow daisies and fashioned it into a ring.

 “Will you marry me Jacob.”

He took the ring and placed it on her finger. “Yes, forever after in our golden world"

Yolanda looked into Jacobs face and she could see her radiant smile coloured the whole of his world.
