Grow Your Own

Today's topic is about growing your own. What does this have to do with travel you might think... well it has everything to do with travel.

Because if you can't physically travel to far flung places, we can at least travel through cuisine.

Vine ripened tomatoes

Let's face it, its been awhile since Australian tables were only graced with meat and three veg.

My grandfather and father both had backyard vegie gardens.

The wonders and benefits of tending a vegie garden, for me, was learnt by osmosis.

The garden is a love of mine, the digging, planting, caring, and then the harvesting.

An easy supplement to the weekly food bill.

Fresh produce will make even the most inexperienced cook produce a winner meal.

A mixture of tomato, red onion, basil and egg plant... presto Italy

Do you like stir fry? My fav meal, especially after a busy day. I just love Asian flavours, broccoli, snow peas, and chilli.

Abundant produce

Who doesn't love Greek salads, kale, lettuce, zucchini, tiny toms... yummo.

Over the years I've grown a mixture of fruit and vegetables. I have two beds going at once, rotating my plantings after every season, meaning tomatoes this year, and lettuce in that spot the following year.

Backyard layout
If your soil becomes over used,  plant a crop of potatoes. But don't put tomatoes there the following season. I've found they don't do well straight after potatoes.

My growing area is small, but with good bed planning, you'll be amazed at what you can produce. I grow my own oranges, and lemons with miniature trees in pots.

Where there's a will there a way.

Let's have a travel tour at our own tables.

What vegetables would you like to grow?
