Writing in 2020

Here we find ourselves in November 2020, with Christmas just round the corner, and my novel is still waiting unfinished.

At present my mojo needs a good kick start, an electrical current to head out onto the writing highway. You may think I’m being a bit too hard on myself, considering I’ve completed two AWA courses Blogging for Beginners and How to Get More Blog Readers.

Let’s take a closer look.  Am I being too hard on myself?  Not at all, because while I’ve completed the above courses, they are in reality, exercises in procrastination.

My voice is quite clear in my ears, 'Once I finish these courses, then I’ll have more time to write.'

It’s the same lament as, 'when the dog stops shedding,' 'the kids leave home,' or God forbid, I retire, 'then I’ll have more time to write.'

Door to Imagination
How are you all doing, am I getting close to the mark?

The reality is there will never be a perfect place or time to write. Life will always get in the way. The trick is to traverse the rocky path with aplomb, and a little dignity. Learn to say 'no' a little more.

You already have five work projects on the burner, do you really need a sixth, your child needs another weekend sport like a hole in the head, make luncheon dates once a week, and let someone else clean up the cat’s kaka.

Make a date with yourself that suits you, family and friends, and stick to it. Say out loud,

'Sorry, today is my writing day, hour, afternoon.'

Whatever suits the schedule. It’s a plan, it will work. I feel enthusiastic already. We need to get our motors running, put pen to paper, small steps will lead to greater determination.

Remember 500 words a day does not mean adding to your novel (every time), it could be structural planning, character descriptions, plot planning, what you’re having for dinner.

Just make a habit.  A very healthy habit of writing every day.

'Whatever you can do or dream you can begin it. Boldness has genius, magic and power in it. Begin it Now.'        - Goethe

What do you do to motivate your writerly self?
